Sprains, joint pain, muscle cramps, strains and even tears of muscles and tendons are common among active athletes. About one-third of sports injuries are mild to moderate sprains or strains of muscles and joints that cause mild pain, swelling and difficulty moving. In most cases, numbing cream, rest and a compress are quite sufficient for recovery.
However, when almost every movement causes pain and this becomes a daily occurrence, many athletes resort to pain medications, which put additional strain on the body and have numerous side effects.
